From as far back as I can remember, I have been an intensely emotional person. The arrivals and departures of friends and relatives would often overwhelm me with a sense of sadness. I recall how I used to cry whenever they arrived for a short visit, not because I wasn’t delighted to see them, but because I dreaded the moment they would have to leave me behind.

As I grew older, I came to understand that life is a series of fleeting moments, each one unique and ephemeral. This realisation led me on a journey to explore the art of letting go. I learned to accept the impermanence of experiences and embrace the beauty of life’s transitions. Throughout history, famous writers and artists, such as Frida Kahlo, Rumi, and Virginia Woolf, have delved into this concept in their works, reminding us that even in the face of heartache and loss, there is still beauty to be found.

I. The Power of Letting Go

As I began exploring the art of letting go, I discovered its transformative power in my own life and recognized its presence in the lives and works of famous artists and writers. These creative individuals used their talents to express their pain, love, and loss, teaching us to appreciate the impermanence of life and the beauty of life’s fleeting moments.

A. Love and Loss in Art

Frida Kahlo, the renowned Mexican painter, is just one of many artists who have embraced the art of letting go. Through her vivid and powerful self-portraits, she channelled her suffering into art, capturing her resilience and strength amidst immense physical and emotional pain. Her tumultuous relationship with Diego Rivera inspired some of her most poignant and memorable pieces, demonstrating the beauty of letting go and moving on.

Similarly, the Italian painter Caravaggio, known for his dramatic and emotional works, captured the struggles and hardships of human existence. His art serves as a testament to the power of letting go and embracing life’s impermanence.

B. Understanding Impermanence in Literature

The concept of impermanence is a recurring theme in literature, as writers throughout history have grappled with the fleeting nature of life and love. From Shakespeare’s sonnets to the contemporary works of Haruki Murakami, the art of letting go has been a powerful force in shaping our understanding of the human condition.

The delicate dance between flowers and bees, as they engage in their ephemeral exchange of pollen and nectar, echoes this sentiment, reminding us that life is an intricate balance of holding on and letting go. Just as flowers release their pollen to be carried away by the bees, we too must learn to embrace the transient nature of our connections and experiences.

In Virginia Woolf’s “To the Lighthouse,” the characters confront the transience of life as they navigate love, loss, and the passage of time. The novel serves as a poignant reminder that life is constantly changing, and we must learn to adapt and let go to move forward.

Rumi, the 13th-century Persian poet, also explored the themes of love, loss, and letting go in his works. His poetry encourages us to embrace change and find beauty in life’s fleeting moments.

Through my exploration of the art of letting go, I have found solace and inspiration in the lives and works of these artists and writers. Their creative expressions of love, loss, and impermanence remind us of the beauty that can be found even in the face of pain and heartache. By understanding the power of letting go, we can appreciate the fleeting moments that make up our lives and find peace in the ever-changing landscape of our existence.

II. Mundane Instances of Letting Go

A. Outgrowing Friendships

As my father worked for the government, we had to change homes frequently. This constant change meant that I had to leave behind friends and adapt to new environments. I never realised that one day it would be my last time playing with my school friends.

The art of letting go taught me that we must cherish the memories while also being open to new friendships and experiences. This lesson in letting go brings me to my next point: the difficulty of parting with cherished places. It’s the bitter truth, but one must understand, almost everything and everyone is replaceable, and one must not be sad about this, but be curious about what comes next.

B. Saying Goodbye to a Childhood Home

The day I bid farewell to my childhood home(s), my heart ached every time. Those walls held my laughter, tears, and memories. As I used to close the door for the last time to physically imply that it's time, it's time to get to the new place and move on.

By releasing our attachment to these spaces, we open ourselves to new beginnings and the opportunity to create fresh memories. This acceptance of change applies not only to our homes but also to our professional lives.

C. Accepting Change in Our Careers

Throughout my career, I have faced challenges and changes that required me to let go of past successes and failures. I discovered that adapting and embracing change is essential to personal and professional growth. As I navigated the twists and turns of my career, I realised that the art of letting go can be just as vital in our relationships.

III. The Art of Letting Go in Relationships

A. Recognising Unhealthy Patterns

To my tumultuous love life, of one-sided mishaps I owe you a big one, to be that great teacher I always needed. One of the unhealthy habits in a relationship is failing to recognise when the other person does not reciprocate.

But what can you do? I think one should try the best they can, but by setting some boundaries, because even animals reciprocate love, so if someone doesn’t reciprocate, it’s definitely not worth it. Leave no room for regret, but also take pride in prioritising yourself and your self-respect first.

B. Embracing Change and Growth

In my journey to let go of old patterns, I learned that embracing change is necessary for personal growth and the development of healthy relationships. By welcoming transformation, I was able to foster deeper connections and create space for new experiences. This openness to change revealed the beauty of moving on.

C. The Beauty of Moving On

Through the art of letting go, I discovered the inherent beauty of moving on from past traumas. This process allowed me to heal and make room for new opportunities and connections. As I embraced the power of letting go of my past traumas, I also sought ways to practice this art in my everyday life.

IV. So How to Practice ‘Letting Go’?

A. Mindfulness and Meditation

I found solace in mindfulness and meditation as I learned to let go. These practices allowed me to become present at the moment and release my attachment to the past and the future. Through mindfulness, I began to cultivate gratitude and acceptance.

B. Gratitude and Acceptance

By practising gratitude, I learned to appreciate the lessons and experiences that life presented to me. Acceptance of life’s impermanence helped me let go of expectations and attachments, creating space for new possibilities. Along with gratitude, I found that creative outlets offered a means to express and process my emotions.

C. Finding Creative Outlets and Activities

Exploring creative outlets and engaging in activities like caring for pets and their newborns (Yes Iggy and Paaku had 7 babies), and going to the gym, allowed me to channel my emotions and experiences into something tangible. I learned to let go of my attachment to my pets when they moved to new homes, and the gym became a place for me to release stress and let go of negative emotions. By engaging in these activities, I discovered new ways to express my journey through the art of letting go and found healing in the process.

These creative outlets not only provided me with a means of self-expression but also served as a reminder of the importance of embracing life’s impermanence. Whether it was creating some art, writing, or a random jamming session on Am backing track, each activity allowed me to transform my pain and heartache into something beautiful and meaningful. As I immersed myself in these pursuits, I gradually began to understand the profound impact of letting go of my emotional well-being and personal growth.

Through this journey, I’ve come to appreciate the art of letting go as an essential aspect of living a fulfilling and authentic life. By releasing our attachments, embracing change, and finding solace in creative expression, we can learn to navigate life’s transitions with grace and resilience. In doing so, we open ourselves to the possibility of growth, healing, and the countless opportunities that await us.

In the end, it seems the wisdom of renowned writers like Virginia Woolf, who once wrote, “You cannot find peace by avoiding life,” holds true even in our quest to master the art of letting go. By acknowledging the impermanence of life and embracing its ever-changing nature, we become like Shakespeare’s “Midsummer Night’s Dream” characters, wandering through an enchanted forest of emotions, sometimes lost, sometimes found, but always growing. As we journey through life’s labyrinth, we learn to let go with a hint of grace, a touch of wit, and the dramatic flair of Frida Kahlo’s brushstrokes (I wish it was this simple).

So, my fellow travellers, may we dance through the chapters of our lives, shedding the old and welcoming the new, all the while painting our stories in the vivid colours of experience.
